When it comes to sunscreen, you’re likely familiar with the SPF label. However modern technology and cosmetic advancements have led to further protective substances and rating systems. 

The SPF number on your sunscreen indicates how long it takes for your skin to burn in the sunlight from UVB rays, PA+++ is a rating system used to indicate the level of UVA protection a sunscreen offers. PA+++ sunscreens can block up to 90% of UVA rays and last for about 8–12 hours. The more plus signs in the PA rating, the higher the level of protection. Here are the other PA ratings and what they mean:

• PA+: Provides some UVA protection, blocking 40–50% of UVA rays
• PA++: Provides moderate UVA protection, blocking 60–70% of UVA rays and lasting for about 4–6 hours
• PA++++: Provides extremely high UVA protection, blocking over 95% of UVA rays and lasting up to 16 hours
